Abstract

A localized collection of pus in the alveolar bone at the root apex of a tooth following death of the pulp with extension of the infection through the apical foramen into the periradicular tissues. Bacterial invasion from infected pulp to the periradicular region which can be due to dental caries, fracture or regressive alterations of teeth (Attrition, abrasion, abfraction). As a sequelae of acute apical periodontitis. May follow initial endodontic treatment if bacteria are forced into the periradicular tissue
